Understanding the Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha
Vata, Pitta, and Kapha - collectively known as the three doshas – are the most foundational concepts in Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurveda has been around for thousands of years and is one of the world's oldest forms of holistic medicine. It is still practised today in many parts of the world.
Ayurvedic medicine is rooted in holistic mind-body healing. Practitioners will often use a person’s dosha profile to find supplements and natural approaches that best support their health and happiness. Each dosha represents an energetic force that governs specific aspects of the body. Understanding them is key to obtaining physical, psychological and spiritual health.
The three doshas are:
Vata: Representing movement, air and space
Pitta: Supporting digestion, metabolism and transformation
Kapha: Responsible for structure, stability and endurance.
In this article, we’ll explore the three doshas, including what they are, what happens when they are out of balance, and the organic Ayurvedic products that can help bring you back into alignment.
What Are the Three Doshas?
In Ayurvedic medicine, every person has a unique ratio of doshas, usually with one standing out more than others. This is the dominant or primary dosha.
The dosha principle is rooted in the idea that the world is made up of five elements: aakash (space), jala (water), prithvi (Earth), teja (fire) and veyu (air). A combination of these elements results in the three doshas.
Vata
Vata is one of the three doshas, representing the elements of air and space. People with a dominant Vata constitution often have fast metabolisms, dry skin and cold extremities. They are generally creative, energetic and quick-thinking. Vata-dosha individuals tend to be more anxious than others and can have trouble concentrating.
According to the principles of Ayurveda, vata-dominant people should follow regular routines, practice meditation and avoid cold temperatures for optimal health and wellbeing.
Vata doshas are aggravated by bitter and astringent tastes but balanced by sweet, sour and salty flavours. In Ayurveda, Vata-dominant people are recommended to follow the Vata-pacifying diet from fall through to winter and early spring, and the Pitta-pacifying diet from late spring to early summer.
An unbalanced vata tends to cause anxiety, fear, isolation and loneliness. It can also lead to physical and emotional exhaustion.
For Vata individuals who struggle to sleep or relax, Ashwagandha supplements can provide some much-needed respite. This herbal remedy is created with a traditional blend of 9 Ayurvedic herbs that promote a calm and relaxed mood, while also supporting immune system health.
For dry skin, Panchatikta Ghrita Guggulu is a traditional Ayurvedic formula for skin health and tissue renewal, while Yograj Guggulu can support comfortable joint and muscle movement.
Pitta
The Pitta dosha is responsible for breaking down food, regulating body temperature and processing thoughts and emotions. It represents the biological fire and water humours.
People who are Pitta-dominant are said to be muscular, athletic, strong and goal-oriented. Typically, they are competitive, tenacious and make great leaders. Those with Pitta constitutions are also blessed with a great enthusiasm for life, as well as strong willpower, great initiative and the ability to laugh at their troubles.
Those with pitta-dominant doshas should focus on calming their often conflict-driven nature, establishing work-life balance and avoiding extreme heat (both weather and spicy food).
Pitta doshas are aggravated by sour, pungent and salty tastes, but balanced by sweet, bitter and astringent flavours.
Pitta skin can often be delicate, irritable and prone to rashes and pimples. An imbalanced Pitta can lead to fiery, reactive emotions (including jealousy, anger and criticism), as well as heat-related disorders, which can affect organ and tissue health.
Pitta skin conditions can be soothed by Panchatikta Ghrita Guggulu tablets. These supplements use a detoxifying and rejuvenating blend that supports all three doshas, cleansing the body of stagnated energy while providing deep detoxification and rejuvenation.
Organic Pitta Oil can calm rashes, hives and psoriasis, while also reducing redness and inflammation. It can be warmed up gently and applied to the skin like a massage oil, providing some much-needed relaxation.
Kapha
The biological force of water/earth, Kapha, means "that which holds things together". It is considered the physical and emotional home of our bodies – governing feelings of compassion, devotion, modesty, patience and forgiveness. People with this dosha are known for keeping things together and providing a support system for others.
When out of balance, Kapha individuals can become possessive, stubborn and lethargic, while also being resistant to change.
The subtle essence of Kapha in the body is called Ojas. Ojas is the body’s prime energy reserve responsible for the vitality of the immune system. If you have an excessive loss of Kapha due to stress, illness or malnourishment, you may suffer from a compromised immune system, which can have both physical and emotional effects.
An ancient Ayurvedic formula called Kanchanar Guggulu has been used for thousands of years to help the body deal with Kapha imbalances. It can support the lymphatic system and encourage healthy metabolic and endocrine activity. Organic Kapha Oil can also do wonders for Kapha imbalances due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
