Ayurvedic Approaches to Digestive Health: Fixing the Root Cause (Agni)

Good digestion is one of the pillars of health in Ayurvedic medicine, driven primarily by the Agni, meaning digestive fire.

As with many modern medical approaches, Ayurveda teaches the importance of a healthy diet, exercise and consistent eating habits, but if you’ve ever suffered with indigestion, constipation or an irritable bowel, you’ll know that finding and fixing the root cause of digestive troubles can be complex.

In this article, we’ll look at the common reasons for poor digestion, as well as some traditional Ayurvedic approaches to help you figure out what’s causing them. We’ll also suggest some natural remedies and lifestyle changes that can alleviate your symptoms and ensure better long-term gut health.

Digestion and Ayurveda: What’s the Link?

Ayurvedic medicine teaches that the Agni transforms food into energy, awareness and intelligence. Strong, balanced digestion prevents the creation of Ama (toxic waste), while weak Agni causes poor digestion, which can lead to disease.

According to ancient Ayurvedic texts, healthy digestion takes around 36 days and ends with something called Ojas. Ojas means “life essence,” or that which supports good health and longevity. Digestion is also inextricably linked to the dosha (mind-body energies).

Poor Digestive Health: Finding the Root Cause

In order to treat poor digestive health, it’s important to identify the contributing factors that could be weakening your digestive fire, or Agni. According to Ayurvedic medicine, digestive problems are commonly caused by:

  • Emotional stress
  • Poor diet
  • Imbalanced doshas
  • Seasonal influences, such as allergies
  • Build of Ama in the body

What is Ama In Ayurvedic Medicine?

If Agni is the digestive fire that turns food into energy, Ama is the opposite. In Ayurveda, Ama is a toxic, disease-causing substance that builds up in the body as a result of impaired Agni, and in turn destroys the Agni.

In Sanskrit, Ama translates to “unripe” or “undigested.” It is essentially a form of unmetabolised waste that, when not cleared and eliminated, becomes the root cause of all disease.

As Ama accumulates in the body, it essentially blocks the srotamsi (channels) and disrupts tissue nutrition, clogging individual cell membranes and weakening your immune responses.

Signs of Ama in the body include:

According to the teachings of Ayurvedic medicine, many modern diseases are a direct result of excess Ama, including gout, late-onset diabetes, depression, kidney stones, glaucoma, bacterial infections, increased liver enzymes and even tumours.

What Causes Ama?

There are many possible causes for an accumulation of Ama in the body, but an impaired Agni is usually part of the puzzle.

Because Ama disrupts Agni, this can often become an uncomfortable cycle, and it can be difficult to tell which problem arose first.

Common causes of Ama include:

  • Poor diet, including overeating and emotional eating
  • Excess amounts of cold or raw food
  • Fried or heavy foods
  • Irregular eating habits
  • High stress
  • Inadequate sleep
  • Lack of routine
  • Sleeping before food is fully digested
  • Lack of exercise
  • Repressed trauma/emotions

How to Eliminate Ama

There are a number of ways to eliminate Ama from the body, including dietary changes, gentle exercise and therapeutic herbs.

Diet

Diet is extremely powerful when it comes to eliminating Ama. Simple adjustments include reducing overly sweet, sour and salty tastes, avoiding mushrooms and heavy root vegetables, steering clear of processed and starchy grains in favour of wholegrains, and limiting eggs, meat and dairy.

Ama can also be flushed from the body with spicy teas made from ginger, cinnamon, cardamom or fennel. You should avoid chilled drinks, sugar and all other sweeteners.

Yoga

Yoga warms the body and helps to stretch and wring out tissues that can store accumulated Ama, while also calming the mind and helping to resolve stress.
