PUNARNAVA literally means the plant that makes one new again and has a special power to renew our health and vitality. Punarnava is particularly good for conditions of weal kidney function leading to water retention and edema. As tonifying diuretic it is often combined with Gokshura.

Punarnava is a powerful herb for the revitalization of the body through the blood and the kidneys. Its Sanskrit name literally means that which renews the body, and it has unique powers to renew the health and vitality of the body. It is a cleaning and strengthening herb that primarily directs its energy towards the liver and the kidneys. By addressing problems in these fundamental organs it restores proper functioning to the whole body and jumpstarts its natural regenerative process.

Punarnava is a powerful diuretic and rejuvenator for kidney and liver tissue. However, unlike most diuretics which simply break down toxins, this one also is very nourishing and regenerative to tissues. It helps to flush out toxins and restore natural and balanced function to these organs. It also helps to heal and rebuild damaged tissue, making it a great treatment for weak kidneys and livers where water retention and poor blood function are problems. For cases of edema of the kidneys, a tea is made with Punarnava herb, ginger, khus and vetiver. It is purifying to the blood, it regulates blood sugar and helps stimulate the production of red blood cells. Hence, it is also a good alleviative treatment for kidneys and livers which are damaged and worn by diabetes and the intake of excess toxins.

The Punarnava herb further acts as a protective agent against further damage to these organs and is especially effective in combination with Gokshura, another powerful diuretic. It has also been shown to have anti-bacterial properties that render it yet more effective against complications of the liver, kidneys, and urinary tract, with Gokshura these effects are enhanced. It can be used with milk in itching of the eyes, with honey in discharges, with ghee in white patches, with oil in immature cataracts, with rice washing water in night-blindness. To help prevent congestive heart failure take one teaspoon of Punarnava herb and one teaspoon of Arjun in honey. In cases of general swelling a paste of it can be applied to the swollen areas. It also has anti-histamine properties which coupled with its anti-inflammatory effects renders it a great treatment for different forms of allergic reactions, where it can be used effectively as a paste.
